A family retreat for adults with disabilities took place in the Lyuboml region from June 27 to
July 1, 2021. It was organized by the team of the Agape Ukraine Rehabilitation Complex and
Fimiam Church in Lutsk.
More than 30 participants from Volyn, Rivne, Zakarpatia and Kyiv had the opportunity to
attend the retreat, chat with friends they have not seen for almost 2 years due to the
coronavirus pandemic, and to make new friends.
People with disabilities do not often have the opportunity to go outside their homes and
fellowship freely with others. So the retreat program was made as rich and interesting as
possible: morning exercises, games, swimming in the lake, a "royal" party and even crossbow
shooting and fights with the participation of knights from the “Ayna Bera” Medieval Combat
Club.
Oleksandr Demchuk was one of the participants. He suffered a severe spinal cord injury in
2016 that confined him to a wheelchair. This young man came to spend time with other
people with disabilities at the retreat for the second time. He says he accepted the invitation
without hesitation because he remembers the impressions from his first retreat well. Even
then he was extremely impressed not only by the living conditions and atmosphere, but also
by the team that organized everything.
– “It is very valuable to see the dedication of volunteers who help us. Their friendliness and
sincerity can be seen when they fellowship with everyone,” says Alexander. “Also, everyone
here is equal. There are no barriers between those who are completely healthy and those who
have certain health problems. And this is the most important thing.”
